Practical information
Climate
It is a tropical savanna ecosystem with two very distinct seasons. Dry Season (Summer: January to April): The heat is intense, but it is the best time to see wildlife (jaguars, caimans, birds) concentrated in the few remaining water pools. Rainy Season (Winter: June to October): The landscape turns emerald green and the plain floods, allowing boat transfers across the savannas. It is the most photogenic period.
Currency
Being remote areas, it is recommended to use USD in cash (low-denomination bills) for tips or purchases of local handicrafts. Tourist services and agency fees are usually prepaid or handled via bank transfer/Zelle.
Getting there
Commercial flights to Barinas or San Fernando de Apure. From there, the transfer is overland in the agency's 4x4 units to the hatos (aprox. 3 to 5 hours by road, depending on the destination).
Local transport
Open safari-type trucks for wildlife viewing and small boats (bongos) to navigate the streams and lagoons.
Useful tips
Don't forget strong insect repellent, sunscreen, and light-colored clothing that covers arms and legs to protect yourself from mosquitoes ("plagues") at sunset.
